Audiovisual education and popular culture: a case study of a well-known telenovela

Abstract

The present paper deals with popular culture in school and specifically with the case study of a well-known telenovela applied to a 5th grade class of a public primary school. It was an important chapter of an extended unit on Media Education, which concerned the holistic approach of the media ecosystem. Typically, the school gives the sense that the pupil’s informal media experiences don’t have a place in class. However, in media pedagogy the teaching topics emerge from pupil’s lives. In this way, the children’s informal experiences are shifted from the periphery to the central scene of the class. The study showed that the insertion of the popular culture in the class gives voice and chances of success to all children without exceptions, particularly to those who ordinarily do not show interest in traditional teaching ways. Furthermore, it creates a pleasant and democratic learning space and cultivates critical awareness.
