Training needs and professional development of newly appointed people in compulsory education

Abstract

Today, continuous education and training is considered an important “investment” of the state towards teachers. This is of particular importance for newly appointed teachers who, upon entering the professional arena, are faced with many challenges. The aim of this work is to study the literature, Greek and International, and to highlight the problems faced by the new teachers and the way they are dealt with by them, the state and their close school environment (colleagues, principal, school counselor). The researches and the personal experiences of the authors as teachers, show that teaching theory is not enough but its application in practice involves many difficulties and particularities, since each class is as individual as the students and teachers who consist it. The way to support the new teachers must be different for each and everyone, to “step” on each one’s advantages and disadvantages and thus individualized actions are proposed, before and after the new teachers take up their duties, mentoring and coaching by experienced teachers and parallel support from the school management.
