Economy, Islam and Eastern Religions: Example of an Interdisciplinary Teaching for Upper High School

Abstract

 

This instructional proposal concerns our experience of teaching the religions (Islam, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism etc.) through interdisciplinary collaboration. We used the theological qualification of one teacher and the economic and human geographic specialization of the other, setting as educational goal the investigation by the students of the question whether Islam and Eastern religions hinder or favor the efforts of the non-Christian world to integrate effectively in the globalized economic environment. While teaching we used a synthetic approach of Religion’s studies and the socioeconomic point of view. The former helps to understand each religion from the outside, which is to say from a historical, sociological and anthropological perspective, including both secular and theological approaches to religion. The latter approaches man’s economic activities in socioeconomic perspective taking into account his beliefs and other social practices and behaviors.
