The contribution of empathy in historical understanding

Abstract

 

This paper presents main reasons that render the cultivation of empathy useful and necessary in the teaching of all subjects and especially history. Furthermore, methodological tools and techniques that promote the development of empathic skills are suggested to achieve historical understanding. Finally, attempts are made for a brief analysis on the problematic of complaints and disputes that have been made about whether and to what extent empathy can contribute to effective historical education.
