The use of simulation in Science teaching. A special reference to simulation programs in Astronomy subject

Abstract

The different technology means can be used for the improvement and the better comprehension during the educational process. In this paper, we tried to compare the effectiveness between the traditional methods of teaching and the ones using simulation programs, in Science. Through the study of different bibliography it was observed that simulation based teaching could bring positive effects to the students learning, although there are studies that estimate traditional methods may be more effective in Science teaching. Therefore, it is recommended simulating programs to be used as helpful tools in class alongside with the traditional teaching. Furthermore, this paper presents three examples of programs (Celestia, Google Earth and Stellarium) that use simulations to explain the astronomical phenomena which could be utilized in the Astronomy class, as they have the ability to provide a full representation of our galaxy and may increase student’s interest to take a few steps deeper into the Astronomy course.
