The academic selection criteria (standards) of students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: Empirical approach

Abstract

This paper presents a research that was carried out in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in autumn 2014 and it deals with the scientific abilities that the students of tertiary education have obtained during their studies in high school in comparison with their studies in the university. The results have shown a lack of substantial connection between the high school and the university. Secondary education is characterized by memorizing the corresponding educational material and a complete lack of studying, analyzing and elaborating of scientific papers, apart from the school textbooks. On the other hand, studies in the university are characterized by the diametrically opposite tendency to reduce the material that has to be memorized, the elaboration, the analysis and the structuring of scientific papers.
