The implementation of the theory of transformative learning in Primary Education

Abstract

This article attempts to highlight the position of the basic principles of the transformative learning in Primary Education through bibliographic research. After a brief reference to the Transformation Theory, as founded by Jack Mezirow, the need and ability of Primary School pupils to engage in transformation processes of their potentially stereotypical points of view are analysed. Bibliographic research shows that basic principles of transformative learning, such as critical reflection, can be cultivated in Primary Education, to the extent that teachers of this level incorporate into their teaching elements that facilitate pupils’ involvement in transformational processes. It is pointed out that this article is part of the doctoral dissertation “Evaluation of the implementation of the method “Transformative Learning through Aesthetic Experience” in Primary Education”, which was held by the author at the Hellenic Open University in 2016-2020.
