The project teaching method on the basis of nutrition and its impact on the cultivation of skills, self-esteem and quality of life for people living in mental health facilities

Abstract

In the context of a new era, where the concepts of «deinstitutionalization», «destigmatization», «inclusion» and «society of equal opportunities for all» have a dominant role, it is necessary to implement educational activities, which will not only provide the opportunity for equal access in the educational benefits, but will also contribute to the integration of people with psychotic experience into society. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the role of educational activity by applying the project teaching method with a main focus on nutrition, in combination with the use of multisensory media in development of skills, in enhancing self-esteem and improving the quality of life of mentally ill individuals who reside in hospital or community facilities of mental health. The research method chosen by the research team for the present study is «action research». The basic steps of action research were followed, while at the same time the principles of the project were utilized with an emphasis on the participatory, collaborative, experiential and multisensory nature of the activities and the principles of the universal learning design. The survey showed a positive result regarding its objectives and the need to support and implement educational programmes of a diverse nature in the field of mental health in the future.
