The impact of ‘Kallipatira’ program on students’ attitudes and on the school climate in relation to racism and xenophobia

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a sports program on attitudes towards racism and xenophobia of primary education students of different nationalities’. The program was used with 248 students of fifth and sixth grade from 6 elementary schools in Athens and Drama. The participants included a pool of students who had the Greek nationality and a group of students who had nationalities other than Greek and their average age was 10.4 (± .9). The Questionnaires that were used for the survey were “Concept of National Identity”, which consisted of 25 questions and “school climate”, which consisted of 17 questions. The same set of questionnaires was used to collect data before and after the intervention. The results showed that the attitudes of students towards the phenomenon of racism and xenophobia improved significantly after the application of “Kallipateira.” Additionally, it was shown that there was no statistically significant difference between Greek and non-Greek students in their perception of how they were treated by others. Moreover, non-Greek students showed improvement on the dimension of consolidation on the national identity scale. In the control group there were no statistically significant differences.
