Perceptions of parental involvement in the educational process and the expectations of the educational sessions at the Elementary School

Abstract

 

While the value of cooperation between the school and the family has been documented, in real terms the implementation of effective forms of cooperation between them is not easy. It is important to determine the content of the intervention programmes of cooperation according to the needs and priorities of the parents and teachers involved. The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes of parents concerning their active participation in the educational process and their expectations from the educational meetings with teachers. Fifty-three parents of sixth grade students from two primary school of the city of Drama participated in the research. The method of survey with questionnaire was used to collect the data. The analysis of the forty-four questionnaires revealed that parents prefer more formal forms of participation, are not willing to participate in the parents’ association, while they want more frequent communication with the school and cooperation with the teacher. As for the educational meetings, parents mainly want to be informed on their children’s performance and behaviour, to communicate with the teacher whenever they want and to determine the agenda of the meetings in collaboration with the teacher.
