Students with Down Syndrome and Inclusive Education – Clinical Profile and Educational Interventions

Abstract

The term “Down syndrome” refers to a genetic chromosomal abnormality, which confers common physical effects as well as deficit cognitive function and psychosocial behavior to individuals of the relevant group. In several countries worldwide, the education policy, facilitates attendance of children with Down syndrome in mainstream schools, using different shapes of integration within the vision of inclusive education, for a school with equal opportunities in learning and in social development, for all children, regardless of special or non-educational needs, without seperated environments, labels and stigmatization. In this direction, this study develops the clinical profile with the most common characteristics of children with Down syndrome and the educational interventions that can facilitate their effective inclusion, completely, in ordinary schools.
