Abstract
The present article aims at presenting the importance of professional development of school leaders – headmasters, as well as stressing the exceptionally great contribution of mentoring in it. More particularly, in the beginning the relationship between school leadership and programmes of professional development is examined, whereas afterwards the evolution of professional development as it took place in the biggest and most advanced countries along with the most important findings concerning the leaders’ preparation is presented as stated in international researches. The aforementioned researches include some common characteristics for the creation of models of effective programmes of professional development. Lastly, the advantages of mentoring concerning school leaders are explained whereas their relation with the professional development of mainly young school leaders is addressed.
