Abstract
International literature argues that a student’s course in the subject of statistics is influenced by their experiences with the mathematics lesson.Thus, the aim of this paper is to design an innovative teaching intervention for students attending a Statistics course which seeks to reduce students’ anxiety about basic mathematical concepts in order to address their potential bias for the lesson and ultimately understand the students’ basic statistical concepts.The teaching intervention based on the implementation tutorial math courses with innovative activities and support materials for designing mathematical concepts.The results showed that the teaching intervention led students in understanding basic mathematical concepts only difficulty with the concept of probability. In conclusion, the creation of positive experiences with mathematics helped to reduce students’ anxiety about learning statistical concepts and reducing the prejudice they had for this, which functioned as self-fulfilling prophecy.
