Abstract

This research aims to investigate the views of secondary school teachers on distance education during the pandemic years 2020-2021 and on the training activities that the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs implemented. For this purpose, a quantitative survey was selected and conducted from 18/02/2022 to 03/03/2022. The data was collected through an electronic questionnaire. The survey involved 920 secondary education teachers from different regions of Greece, the majority of whom were women (67.8%), over 40 years old (83.5%), permanent employees(80.9%) and of 6-25 years of service in public education (61.4%), who during the current school year served in junior high schools and senior high schools (75%). The research showed that secondary school teachers were satisfied with the support provided by state agencies and state officials for the implementation of distance education during the pandemic period to a small degree and with the function of said agencies and the overall response of said officials to a very small degree. Most of the teachers, prior to the pandemic, had never used the e-class and e-me platforms. However, they all recognized the importance of distance education. The degree of satisfaction with the training activities was moderate and with the training programs moderate to small. The participation of secondary school teachers in training programs was moderately affected by various causes. Female teachers recognized the importance of distance education to a greater degree than male teachers. Teachers who held a PhD showed a greater degree of satisfaction with the support of the above-mentioned state actors and educational activities. Fixed term teachers, younger teachers of up to 40 years of age who totaled up to 5 years of service expressed a greater degree of satisfaction with the state actors and training programs in question. Teachers of 1-15 years of service showed a greater degree of satisfaction with the training activities.
