Headteachers’ Biographies – Perception and Signification of the Headteacher’s Role in Greek School

Abstract

The current paper deals with issues related to the complexity of the role of headtachers of primary schools in Greece. These issues are approached through a biographical scope (life stories). The biographies shed light not only to the personal stories of headteachers but also to the socio-economic, cultural and institutional context in which they are formed.
Through the emerging narration of experiences, information is obtained concerning the way headteachers perceive and give meaning to their role. The exploration of their personal paths and the identification of the factors involved in their formulation aims at answering the crucial question related to the identity of those who possess the headteachers position in Greek Primary education.
