Managing Cultural Diversity: Investigating the Attitudes of Primary Education Teachers in Attica

Abstract

The movements of large population groups in western countries in particular, especially in the last decades, have made significant changes in the composition of their population. These changes also touched on the field of education. The student population presents a cultural diversity, often shaking the perceptions based on its homogeneous national and cultural composition, in many countries, including Greece. This new reality has made it imperative to manage this diversity. The purpose of this research was to investigate the views of primary school teachers in Attica on cultural diversity. For the effective conduct of the research, the quantitative approach was followed using a questionnaire in February and March 2017. The sample consisted of 207 primary school teachers in Attica. The results showed that the teachers of sample: do not follow in a multicultural classroom personalized teaching, the use of language and culture elements of foreign / immigrant / student refugees as a strategy, do not create appropriate teaching materials for these pupils, while following the creation of mixed groups of children.
