Teaching methods implemented by adult educators when working with young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs)

Abstract

This study presents a quantitative survey conducted with a sample of 65 adult educators by means of a questionnaire. It focuses on the teaching methods implemented by adult educators within the context of education programmes addressed to young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) in Greece. As this topic has not been sufficiently studied, the study seeks to close research gaps. The findings showed that adult educators in Greece implement learner-centred teaching methods when they work with NEETs, confirming that these methods are the most appropriate ones for this group of learners. However, they seem not to utilize to the greatest possible extent available tools that may support their teaching work. Also, NEETs’ dysfunctional habits of mind seem not to be taken sufficiently into account. The survey findings may be utilized in the design of professional development activities to better support adult educators working with NEETs as well as in the design of education programmes for NEETs to better support their learning process.
