The role of secretaries through the perceptions of the principals of secondary schools in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Abstract

In Greek literature the key role of the secretaries in the daily life of a school has been little appreciated. The purpose of the research was to demonstrate the need for administrative staff for the smooth runningof the schools, as well as the breadth of the role of secretaries. A separate goal was to explore the principals’ perceptions on the scope and contribution of the secretaries in the school management, as well as on secretaries’ training. The semi-structured interview tool was used for the needs of the project. Seven telephone interviews were received from random school principals. The conclusions state that secretaries have an obvious role that includes secretarial support, but they also have a less obvious role that includes their contribution to public relations, the image of the school, the school climate. Therefore, regular training in new technologies, first aid and the development of collaboration and public relations skills is essential.
