Conflict management and resolution strategies between teachers in school – The role of the Headmistress

Abstract

This paper studies the conflict management between teachers in the school context and the role of the school leader. The criticality of conflict management for the functioning and development of a school unit is highlighted. The important role of communication and interpersonal relationships between members of the school community in creating a positive school climate is emphasised. It has been observed that conflicts between teachers are an integral part of the school organisation and arise from different perceptions, values and attitudes, but can be dealt with in creative and constructive ways. In the following, the stages of conflict in a school organisation and the strategies for dealing with it are outlined, which need to be adapted to the context and characteristics of each specific situation. Finally, the role of the school leader in both conflict prevention and effective conflict management is highlighted, which includes encouraging teachers’ autonomy and creativity.
