The development of critical thinking and the cultivation of students’ creativity

Abstract

Increasing complexity and the competitive environment constitute the development of critical thinking and creativity the structural elements of modern teaching practice. Critical thinking and creativity cultivate acts of self-action upgrade pre-existing processes and transform knowledge, through cognitive mechanisms of discovery, into new forms and applications of knowledge. In the context of formal education the teacher is called upon with the use of appropriate mechanisms to transform the passive reception and reproduction of information into active participatory actions together with their pupils. By means of cognitive strategies and by involving their pupils in experiential processes, he encourages and guides them in deductive reasoning and reasoned proposals; he engages with future active citizens in cognitive conflict, reflection, self-awareness and self-perception by redefining relationships of reality for a deeper understanding of themselves and the world.
